On our third day in Siem Reap, we woke up at 4:30 am and took a tuk-tuk in the dark to get to Angkor Wat before sunrise. It was pitch black when we arrived, and we slowly felt our way over the entrance bridge to watch the sunrise. Just because it was 4:30 am doesn't mean we had the place to ourselves, it was actually packed with tourists who all had the same idea. But we got to see the shadow of Angkor Wat emerge from the darkness as the sun slowly came up in the background.
Note: if you are planning a visit to Angkor Wat, try not to schedule it on the weekend of Chinese New Year, when thousands of Chinese tour groups descend on the temples filling your photos with a sea of safari vests and expensive digital cameras, even at 4:30 am.
