A two-day intensive linoleum block carving workshop taught by Katharine in her Portland, Maine studio.

This class will be held on June 10th and 11th, 2023.

Tuition includes two days of class, all required materials, two lunches, and a Saturday cocktail hour.

This class will cover the basics of linoleum block carving, starting small and working up to a more advanced large block by the end of the weekend. No previous printmaking experience required, but students with experience are also welcome.

We will start by learning about the tools and techniques of linoleum carving, testing out different materials and practicing different styles. We will run test prints on Katharine’s proof press, learning to ink the blocks and discovering what works best when designing your piece.

After test carvings and prints, we will move on to carving a larger block, before printing it at the end of the class on fine art paper.

Class runs Saturday and Sunday 10-4, and includes lunch both days and a wine and cheese cocktail hour after class on Saturday. All materials included, and you will go home with your carved blocks and your finished fine art piece at the end (time and carving speed permitting).

COVID Protocols:
We will be requiring proof of full vaccination to attend this class! Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated students will not be able to attend, and no refunds will be given for those who are unable to show proof of vaccination. Our definition of "fully-vaccinated" will be based on CDC guidelines in June 2023. We will not be requiring masks once you are in the studio, but you are welcome to wear one according to your comfort level. The class will be taught indoors in Katharine's studio. Weather permitting we will be eating outside, but may move inside if necessary.
This class is non-refundable. We will not be offering refunds for travel delays or cancellations, and we strongly recommend buying travel insurance that will cover the cost of your trip in case of disruptions to your plans.
If it becomes necessary to move the class date because of Covid, we will transfer you to another class date (with your approval) and run the class at another time.
We will keep participants informed about updated Covid protocols by email.

Each session is limited to 10 students and the class will run even if it isn’t full, so you can begin planning your trip now. We highly recommended buying travel insurance if you are traveling from out of town. Class is non-refundable and non-transferrable between dates, but may be transferred between people or given as a gift.

Once you are registered, we can help recommend hotels or Airbnbs as well as activities in Portland. You can also check our "Maine" story highlight to see some of our favorite Maine restaurants, shops, and beaches.

Feel free to bring source images or ideas that you are inspired by, but we recommend keeping an open mind on what you’d like to make until you get a feel for the materials.

We will be following up by email with more details closer to the date!
