Linoleum Carving and Block Printing Workshop - May 16+17

$395.00
A two-day intensive linoleum block carving workshop taught by Katharine in her Portland, Maine studio.
-
This class will be held on May 16th and 17th, 2020.
-
Tuition includes two days of class, all required materials, two lunches, and a Saturday cocktail hour.
-
This class will cover the basics of linoleum block carving, starting small and working up to a more advanced large block by the end of the weekend. No previous printmaking experience required, but students with experience are also welcome.
-
We will start by learning about the tools and techniques of linoleum carving, testing out different materials and practicing different styles. We will run test prints on Katharine’s proof press, learning to ink the blocks and discovering what works best when designing your piece.
After test carvings and prints, we will move on to carving a larger block, before printing it at the end of the class on fine art paper.
-
Class runs Saturday and Sunday 10-4, and includes lunch both days and a wine and cheese cocktail hour after class on Saturday. All materials included, and you will go home with your carved blocks and your finished fine art piece at the end (time and carving speed permitting).
-
Each session is limited to 10 students and the class will run even if it isn’t full, so you can begin planning your trip now. We highly recommended buying travel insurance if you are traveling from out of town in the unlikely event of an emergency cancellation. Class is non-refundable and non-transferrable between dates, but may be transferred between people or given as a gift.
-
Once you are registered, we can help recommend hotels or Airbnbs as well as other things to do in Portland.
-
Feel free to bring source images or ideas that you are inspired by, but we recommend keeping an open mind on what you’d like to make until you get a feel for the materials.
-
We will be following up by email with more details closer to the date!

Great workshop!

The workshop was hands on fun. Katharine taught at great pace to help everyone get comfortable with the process of carving and printing. The studio is beautiful and comfortable, lunches were excellent, and the participants were lovely. Perfect introduction to block printing and for those experienced but want to just create and learn new tips. I personally came back inspired and haven’t stopped carving yet!

Such a great time

From the flowers on the table when I first walked in to Joes food and our final printing session it was a great workshop. I came away feeling like I can pursue this medium and hope this to be a niche for me. You were very encouraging and supportive as you taught us a new skill! Thanks for that. Can’t wait to get started.
